Whether you’ve been active all your life or are just starting to understand the importance of health and fitness – don’t be discouraged by the myths floating around out there about what people over 40 can and cannot do. Below are some of the biggest falsehoods that are meant to discourage you. Don’t let them!
- You’ll Never Reach Your Ideal Body Weight Now That You’re Over 40
Not true. As long as your ideal body weight expectations are healthy, there is no reason why you cannot reach that goal now that you are over 40. It is possible for people to lose weight at any age –this is not reserved for the young. The key is finding the right formula to unlocking your weight loss success. For most it’s a combination of adapting healthy eating habits –not crash dieting –and maintaining an active lifestyle. Don’t be discouraged if something doesn’t work right away. Weight loss doesn’t happen overnight at any age.
- If You Start Exercising Now, You’ll Hurt Yourself
Also a myth. No matter what age you begin your exercising journey; you need to start at a suitable level of fitness. Even at 20, if you’ve never jogged before it wouldn’t be healthy to jump right into a 5k. You have to start at a reasonable pace, and then build upward in realistic increments. Fitness becomes increasingly important the older you get, and it offers benefits at every age.
- Middle-Age Weight Increase is Unavoidable
Only if you don’t exercise and live an unhealthy lifestyle. While our metabolism does slow slightly as we age –5 to 10 percent a decade –changes can be made to accommodate this to avoid packing on extra pounds. If you eat like you did when you were in college and don’t exercise, you will probably gain weight. However increasing your time spent exercising and being more mindful of what you are eating can go a long way to avoiding those “middle-age”pounds.
- It Has to Hurt to be Effective
There is a difference between actual pain and the soreness associated with working new muscles. Workouts should be challenging, but they should never be painful. If you are experiencing actual pain, that’s a sign that something is wrong and your body is telling you to stop. Staying fit and exercising after 40 does not mean you will be in constant pain. But if it hurts to laugh a little the next day because your ab muscles are sore – hey, that’s just a sign that you’re doing something right!
- It’s Too Late to Start Now
Unless you’re dead, it is never too late to start exercising and living a healthy lifestyle. Start with incorporating long walks into your routine, then work yourself up to a jog, then a run. Take up tennis. Learn to surf. Find something you enjoy doing, that will keep your body moving and healthy. It’s never too late to start improving your health.
